What is Kids Club?

Kids Club is for patients, ages 5 and up, who are not ready quite for treatment. This program has two main benefits:

  1. It enables members to be established with a board certified orthodontist such as Dr. Prestwich, who can answer any questions they may have about teeth alignment and bite and jaw.
  2. It allows us to follow the recommendation of the American Association of Orthodontics that every child be screened by an orthodontist by age 7.

Kids Club Details:

  • Any child 5 years and older is eligible to sign up for Kids Club
  • Kids Club members receive a free Prestwich Orthodontics Kids Club t-shirt upon signing up

What is orthodontics?

Orthodontics is the treatment of irregularities in the teeth (especially of alignment and bite) and jaw, including the use of braces or clear aligners.

What is an orthodontist?

An orthodontist, such as Dr. Prestwich, is a dental specialist who received an additional two-to-three years of specialized education beyond dental school to learn the proper way to diagnose, prevent, intercept, and treat teeth and jaw irregularities. They correct existing conditions and are trained to identify problems that may develop in the future. Only those who successfully complete this formal education may call themselves orthodontists.  Orthodontists work with people of all ages, from children to adults.

Why 7?

At this age, jaw relationships are beginning to be defined as permanent front teeth and molars are erupting, allowing a trained orthodontists, such as Dr. Prestwich, to spot problems like crossbites, deep overbites, and severe crowding that might benefit from early intervention.

Why Consult Early?

The check-up may reveal that your child’s bite is fine.  Or, Dr. Prestwich may identify a developing problem but recommend monitoring the child’s growth and development, and then, if indicated, begin treatment at the appropriate time for the child.  In other cases, the orthodontist might find a problem that would benefit from early treatment.

Early Treatment Can:

  • Guide jaw growth
  • Correct harmful oral habits
  • Guide permanent teeth into a more favorable position
  • Improve appearance
  • Improve the way lips meet
  • Improve your child’s bite and self-confidence
  • Reduce the severity of the case and subsequent future treatment

What If My Child Is Older than 7?

If your child is older than 7, it’s certainly not too late for a check-up.

Because patients differ in both physiological development and treatment needs, Dr. Prestwich’s goal is to provide each patient with the most appropriate treatment at the most appropriate time.

Problems To Watch For in Growing Children

In addition, if you notice any of the following in your child, check with your orthodontist:

  • early or late loss of baby teeth
  • difficulty chewing or biting
  • mouth breathing
  • jaws that shift or make sounds
  • speech difficulties
  • biting the cheek or the roof of the mouth
  • facial imbalance
  • grinding or clenching of the teeth
